MARAS MORAY SALINERAS

This half-day visit to the admirable agricultural laboratory of Moray and the salt mines of Maras, with more than 3,000 salt pits, are very special places that are part of the Sacred Valley and even the trip from Cusco offers spectacular and beautiful views with its mountain chains. You can see the mountain range of URUBAMBA among other mountains this half day excursion is an outdoor activity outside the city of Cusco it is a wonderful tour. Maras and Moray are incredible places. The salt mines of Maras are impressive salt exploitations that can be found in the landscape of Qoripujio 4 km from the town of Maras. It has salt mines that have been exploited since the Inca era as a form of exchange of economic value. From Maras you can visit the salineras via a narrow path, here you can find mules that still carry the salt that is extracted from the natural salt mines.

Moray is a beautiful Inca Agriculture Laboratory for the purpose of acclimatizing all the different crops. The purpose of these depressions is uncertain, but its design of depth and orientation with respect to the wind and the sun creates a temperature difference of up to 15 ° C (27 ° F) between the top and the bottom. It is possible that this great difference in temperature was used by the Inca to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops.

Itinerary

After breakfast at the hotel, we will pick you up between 8:30 am and 9:00 am with our transportation. Then we will head to the village of MARAS on the way we will enjoy some typical villages and beautiful landscapes. We will visit a village where you can see the Vilcanota mountain range as well as its magnificent snow-capped mountains such as the “Chicón” and “La Verónica”. This town maintains some attractions of the colonial and republican period, in colonial times it was also the main point of passage for both entering and exiting the city of Cusco. Continuing with the tour we will arrive at the archeological complex of MORAY located 7 km. from the town due to its climatological characteristics this place was considered as a center of agricultural experimentation (greenhouse) obtaining products of high nutritional quality. Finally we will visit the SALINERAS which is made up of approximately 3,000 salt pits that were exploited during the Inca times, as well as the colonial period, and today the people maintain it as well as use it for commercialization. Afterwards we will return to the city of Cusco.

LOCATION

It is located at an altitude of 3700 meters. Maras is located at a distance of 48.10 km on the highway Cusco- Chinchero – Urubamba.

The Salinas of Maras is an impressive salt exploitation that is in the area called Qoripujio at 4km from the town of Maras.
